Statement by Mark S. Allen, Chicago Chairman of National Black Wall Street Chicago
"Sad note that Rev. Lewis Flowers made his transition yesterday at the age of 62.
Rev. Flowers was a long time grassroots activist and leader of The Westside Minsters Coalition. In addition to that I worked with Rev Flowers for more than 30 years, most recently with The Monroe Foundation's Community Reinvestment Organizers Project and we served together as Commissioners of the former Chicago School Board Nominating Commission, where Rev Flowers supported me as Vice-Chairman he was always a great local supporter of the local Black Wall Street Black economic empowerment movement.

A great champion for our people. I mean from the first Black Mayor to the first Black President you could find Rev. Flowers actively and systematically involved!!"

Dr. Flowers leaves to mourn his wife, Cynthia, three sons,  Durand, Duwane and Elijah, two daughters, Lanita Joyner and Blaire Flowers, three brothers, Victor, Cornelius and Dennis, three sisters, Lorinda, Jocelyn and Aretha, nine grandchildren and one grand-child.

asthma control

Compliments of www.RealAge.com

  1. Watch what you eat. In addition to avoiding food triggers you may have (sulfites in processed potatoes, shrimp, dried fruit, beer, and wine, are common ones), consider adding inflammation-fighting nutrients to your diet, such as antioxidant-rich produce and omega-3-rich oils and seeds. Check out these 9 foods that may help fight asthma inflammation.
  2. Control your weight. People with asthma who are overweight tend to have more airway inflammation and more severe and persistent symptoms, compared to people with asthma who maintain a healthy weight. If you are carrying extra pounds, losing weight may help you breathe more easily. Learn how weight loss helped this 38-year-old woman gain control over asthma.
  3. Get regular exercise. If your asthma is well-controlled, you can likely be active without symptoms. Regular exercise can help you shed weight, reduce stress, and boost sleep quality. If you suffer from exercise-induced asthma, ask your doctor about strategies to minimize your symptoms during workouts, such as taking medication before you're active, exercising indoors, or avoiding exercise on days when the pollen count or air pollution level is high. Discover the health benefits of walking just 30 minutes a day.
  4. Take care of stress. The link between stress and worsening asthma symptoms has long been established. Stress and anxiety don't cause asthma, but they can make symptoms worse -- even trigger an attack. Strong emotions can also make you hyperventilate, which can narrow your airways. Here are 5 ways to get a handle on your emotions.
  5. Get a good night's sleep. Acid reflux during sleep can trigger nighttime asthma attacks, and people who have unstable asthma are more prone to developing sleep apnea. Treating your sleep conditions may help you achieve better asthma control. (Do you have a sleep disorder? Take this quick sleep health assessment to find out.)

pay for dead son's loan?

To Zelda!

It's been three years since my only son Jermaine died. I'm trying to get past my grief -- but I relive my son's death every time I get a phone call from American Education Services asking me to pay back his student loan.

When Jermaine went to college to study music production, I was more than happy to cosign his student loans -- he dreamt of making a better life for himself and I was
proud to be able to help him do that. But no one told me I would be forced to pay even
if he died.

I think it's wrong for the bank to harass me for the loan of my dead son
s
so I started a petition on Change.org demanding that American Education Services forgive the debt and let my family grieve.

Click here to sign my petition.

Nobody could have prepared me for the loss of my only child. Sometimes it's impossible to get out of bed in the morning. I have been trying to work to make the loan payments, but in addition to grieving for Jermaine, I now need to help support the young son
he left behind.

While he was alive, Jermaine made his loan payments. Jermaine never had an
opportunity to use his education and I can't use it either.

Jermaine had three student loans when he passed away -- two from the federal government, and one private loan. The federal loans were forgiven within a month of his death. But American Education Services refused to forgive their loan.

Will you sign my petition to help convince American Education Services to
forgive the debt of my dead son?

Thank you so much for your help.

romney may ship your job to china?

"President Obama: Bail Out. Mitt Romney: Sell Out!"
Rev Jesse Jackson joins with workers in Freeport, Illinois to protest the closing of Sensata Technologies, a manufacturing plant where Presidential candidate Mitt Romney is a major stockholder. American employees are losing their $14 per hour jobs to China, where workers are paid just .99 cents per hour. This reveals Mitt Romney's real economic plans for America. Romney's Company Outsourcing Jobs?

Romney's Company Outsourcing Jobs?

FYI
from Truth Be Told News!

Contributing Correspondent: Mark S. Allen
Will the National Media Challenge Romney?
Will the Obama Campaign Raise This Issue?

How does the major media allow Mitt Romney to continue to campaign on the fact
that he wants to bring and keep good paying jobs in the United States while at the
same time not commenting or being challenged on one of his companies (Sensata Technologies Plant) in Illinois currently outsourcing 170 jobs to China! On MONDAY, OCTOBER 29th the workers and their supporters led yet another public demonstration
at the Freeport, Illinois plant trying to get the attention of the national media as well
as Mitt to save their jobs and keep Romney's commitment to keep good paying jobs like in Illinois and the United States and not outsourced to China!

The Rev. Jesse Jackson and 13 Sensata Technologies employees were arrested last
week in a protest at Sensata plant in Freeport, IL. The group was apprehended on plant property in an attempt to meet with management to make the case for keeping the
plant open and saving the workers’ jobs from being sent to China.

They were released after processing by local law enforcement.
Having already shuttered two of its three manufacturing sites in the USA, the Romney owned company is in the process of outsourcing 170 well-paying jobs to China from the remaining plant in Freeport despite record profits. Sensata began the terminations last Friday and they will continue through the end of the year. The job loss at the plant will result in the loss of $7.7 million in wages that feed the local economy according to Stephenson County Chairman John Blum.

Sensata Technologies, which was created by Bain Capital in 2006, develops
manufactures and sells sensors and controls for major auto manufacturers such as
Ford and General Motors. While at Bain, Republican presidential candidate
Romney pioneered the business model that today is costing Sensata workers their
jobs. And he is still financially tied to Sensata.

Thanks to his retirement agreement with Bain, Romney owns close to $8 million in
Bain funds that together hold 51 percent of the company’s shares--a controlling financial stake. As a result, Romney not only profits directly from Sensata but also stands to profit from the outsourcing of the Sensata workers’ jobs.

Adding insult to injury, Romney secured a major tax deduction by transferring
$170,000 worth of Sensata stock to one of the charities he runs.
During their public demonstration on MONDAY, OCTOBER 29th in Freeport, Illinois -
It is the hope of these 170 workers that the national political media and
Mitt himself will focus on their fight to keep their jobs.

calling parties

Yvonne—We're all sending our thoughts and prayers to everyone recovering from the storm. Voter turnout is being disrupted in key states like OH and PA. So the rest of us need to redouble our efforts because the election is so close—we've set a new goal of 5,000 of us making calls from parties this weekend—can you join in?

We only have 7 days left to volunteer to make sure swing state voters know what's at stake in this election, know how to vote, and know their rights at the polls. There's a GOTV call party in Chicago on Saturday at 12:00 PM. Can you come?

RSVP Now!

Dear MoveOn member,
I don't just want Mitt Romney to lose on November 6th—I want there to be no doubt about it.
See, if this race ends up as close as the polls say it will, Republican voter suppression and intimidation could make all the difference—the difference between a second Obama term and all of us getting used to saying "President Romney."
I don't want to get used to that. Do you? And we don't have to. If we all step it up this weekend and create a surge of grassroots people power by hitting the phones, we'll win by enough to overcome the Republican effort to steal the election.
MoveOn members are hosting nearly 500 Get Out The Vote call parties this weekend to recruit badly needed volunteers in swing states like Ohio and Florida for the final push. Matthew S. is throwing a party in Chicago on Saturday at 12:00 PM. Can you come?
I was born in an America where, because of race or money, many people couldn't vote. I never thought we'd go back to that, but that's exactly where today's Republican Party is taking us. They passed racist voter suppression laws in key states, they've run ad campaigns to scare people in low-income neighborhoods out of voting, and now they're training activists by the thousands to intimidate progressive voters at the polls on election day.
So let's win big. Let's make sure no state comes down to a handful of votes. Let's make sure this election doesn't get decided by the courts—especially not the Supreme Court.
I'm going to be out there every day between now and the election making sure voters know what's at stake, know how to go vote, and know their rights at the polls.
I like saying "President Obama." I don't want to learn anything new. Please, join in before it's too late.
Can you make it to a call party on Saturday in Chicago to help?
Sincerely,
–Michael Moore
P.S. This week I've produced something very special with MoveOn.org—a new video where members of our Greatest Generation explain how they've done their part to preserve this country's values, but that now it's our turn. They're very...direct. You definitely shouldn't watch it at work (and if you're easily offended, you might want to skip it, or watch the bleeped version here). Please check it out—it brings this home in a way I guarantee you've never heard before.
Want to support our work? We're entirely funded by our 7 million members—no corporate contributions, no big checks from CEOs. And our tiny staff ensures that small contributions go a long way. Chip in here.

financial breaks for students

University of Chicago to offer financial breaks to Chicago high school students

University of Chicago to offer financial breaks to Chicago high school students
Source:  Chicagobusiness.com
It looks like the University of Chicago has decided that there's no place like home.

The school that traditionally sets its sights on the nation and the world is announcing an initiative designed
to attract more students from its home town by making it more affordable for them to attend U of C.

Under plans being unveiled this afternoon with Mayor Rahm Emanuel, the university will allow any student
in a Chicago high school — public, private or parochial — to apply for free without paying the usual
$75 application fee.  And, if they're admitted and get financial aid, it will be in the form of grants and not loans
that have to be repaid, meaning that Junior may be able to avoid tens of thousands of post- graduation debt.

"The University of Chicago has a long-standing commitment to improving urban education through research,
innovative ideas and practices.  That commitment begins here in our city," said U of C President Robert J.  Zimmer,
in a statement.  "While the average debt for students at the university has been shrinking .  .  .  (this program)
represents an important new step in driving down debt for our students from Chicago — while also answering
a call from Mayor Rahm Emanuel to help improve college opportunities for the city's students."

Mr.  Emanuel — whom I suspect wasn't at all shy about asking for this favor — said the new step "will help
many young Chicagoans achieve their goals and graduate without a financial burden.  Chicago is committed to
ensuring that every child has access to a high-quality education, from our preschools to our world-renowned universities."
