Here at the threshold of The New Promised Land...with the coming of the Obama Presidential Library, Museum, and Foundation and the billions in wealth they'll create for Chicago's south lakefront investors, why not take our "winning lottery ticket" and do what's desperately needed and never done? Build community wealth with tried-and-true strategies that can rebuild the vanquished African American middle-class.
As Chicago reinvents itself from the ruins of its crisis in public finance, social justice, economic equity, and educational parity, let's make sure we level-the-playing field with policies, practices, payments, and philosophies that replace the gears of structural racism and reduce the extreme racial wealth disparity it generates.
We grapple with how to redevelop black neighborhoods, with diversity a key strategy. But who suggests a Chinese community is improved by adding Greeks, or by moving them into a Greek enclave. Segregation is not the problem, and diversifying black neighborhoods is not the solution. Moving people around by skin color won't fix the impacts of race-based systems which follow their targets wherever they go. Fix the system. And meanwhile let the people in their places build their own buffers and delights, and support them.
Market forces alone will never stabilize black neighborhoods in the throes of scaled improvement. Without targeted protections, the cost of dwellings, taxes, and amenities will always move beyond the reach of black neighbors, who by virtue of America's racial wealth disparity, will not have the means to stay abreast. The African American family can no longer afford Chicago's tony, integrated Hyde Park. Here and now, why not join Blacks in Green™ for a new economic and environmental experiment?
