measures to prevent gun violence.

Zelda,
I represent a district here in Chicago that's been devastated by gun violence.
And we're not alone. I'm sure you've seen the headlines -- our city is suffering from an epidemic of violence and shootings.
The question is: How many people have to die before we do something about it?
How many hearts do we have to see broken? How many families do we have to see torn apart before we act?
Last month, our city took an important step forward.
Cook County Board members agreed to place a referendum on the ballot in November that will let voters voice their support for common-sense gun reform: strengthening background checks and banning military-style assault weapons and high capacity ammunition magazines.
Governor Quinn is fighting for sensible gun reform in Illinois, and I'm proud to stand with him.
We are losing a generation of young people -- but we have a chance to do something about it.
We can strike the right balance between protecting the Second Amendment and protecting public safety. That starts with banning military-style assault weapons and keeping guns out of the wrong hands.
Send a message to lawmakers: This cannot wait any longer.
